Expellers & extraction meals
Palm Kernel Expellers are enriched in protein. Expellers are the byproduct of the milling of palm oil and copra from the extraction of vegetable oil. The byproduct from palm oil mills is known as palm kernel expeller, whereas the byproduct from the coconut oil mills is known copra expellers. Owing to its richness in energy, protein, oil and roughage, the expeller meal is suitably used as ruminant feed for growth and fattening of farming animals. In addition, the fueling demand for vegetable oil has made the palm kernel expellers and copra expellers sufficiently |

available for the export market. Ranging from animal farmers who prefer to customize their feed to feed mills providing for poultry and cattle feed production, utilization of the expeller meal are in high demand in regions such as Europe, South Korea, Japan and the South East Asia. The expeller meal is viewed as a cost effective alternative protein source to reduce feed reliance on maize.
Extraction meal identifies itself from the expeller owing to a difference in the oil extraction. While the expellers uses a mechanical based oil milling, the extraction meal relies on a higher efficiency solvent based extraction. As a result, the oil content in extraction meal are much lesser than in the expellers. Genvalence offers both the palm kernel (expeller), palm kernel (extraction) and copra expellers from Malaysia. Working with numerous oil mills and extraction plants, genvalence is well positioned to offer ample and stable supplies in large quantities of to meet the long term demand of mills and farmers.

Going Clumpless! The Meal Choice |
Original palm kernel expeller comes in clumps! These form of expeller has an average size ranges from 5-10 cm, and is known as cake by the oil mills. Direct farmer-importers prefer the expeller to be smaller and more uniformed sized in order to feed animals directly; saving precious time and costs. Most importantly it is much favourable as an immediate high energy dairy cattle feed.
We listened and we present clumpless! The expeller cake is subjected to additional processing of grinding, milling and filtered to offer the same high quality feed, only much smaller! With an average size of 1 mm, palm kernel expellers are of high energy and suitable for dairy cattle production.

Laboratory Analysis |
|
Figure below illustrates the nutrient content analysis done for the meals of palm kernel expellers, palm kernel extraction and copra expellers. Analysis is done for the nutrients of protein, oil, fibre, carbohydrate and moisture. While the protein count of the expeller meals are fairly similar, (15-18%), the fibre count is the highest in the palm kernel expellers. The palm kernel extraction meal has the lowest oil content of 2.7% compared to the rest with an oil content 8%.Table provides a nutrient summary of the meals

Figure compares the nutrient contents of the expeller and extraction based meals. While the palm kernel and copra expellers shares a similar nutritional value, the palm kernel extraction has an observable low oil content. Table shown on the right provides the numerical comparison of the nutrient content. |
Field test of animals with meal incorporation into cattle feed
Figures below show 1.5 years old heifer fed with a grazing diet compared to one with added supplementary expeller meal in the diet.

Upon conditioning from the grazing diet, the palm kernel expeller meals can be consumed in its raw form as a source of protein and fat in the diet. |

 |
Beefing up and the fattening of the animal is observed after 3 months of incorporating reasonable amount of the expeller into the animal's diet. |
